On a well, yes, every time: nothing treats well water before it reaches you, so we test before we size anything. Otherwise we size from your source, what you are seeing and how big the place is, and the price is on paper before anything is ordered. We do test at the install, before and after, so there is a record of what changed and our tech already has your numbers the day you call.

They fix different problems. A softener takes out hardness, which is the scale on the kettle and the spots on the glass. A carbon filter handles chlorine, disinfection byproducts and odor. Plenty of homes need both, which is what a dual tank system is. Which one you need comes from your source and what you are actually seeing, not from a pitch.

Wells usually bring iron and sulfur along with hardness. Iron is the orange stain in the tub and on the fixtures, sulfur is the smell people describe as eggs. The dual tank well system is built for exactly that. City water is more often a taste and byproduct question.
